Haskie Benally is a Master of the Western Art Style of painting which involves not only
technical understanding of the medium and color theory, but also a thorough knowledge of
the subject matter, It has been a part of him.
Born in 1942 in Sand Springs, Arizona, on the Navajo Reservation, Haskie began to
develop his artistic instincts by drawing when he was only eight years old. Working as a
sheepherder in his early years gave him ample opportunity to study the natural life of his
surroundings. Under the encouragement of his father, he took advantage of whatever
materials were available, paper bags, boxes and sand stone cliffs near his home to portray
his art.
As with many Native American Artists, Haskie is self taught, Through his many years as
Artist he has also acquired knowledge from the inspiration of many well-known Western
Artists such as Frank McCarthy, Arnold Freberg and Ray Swanson.
Haskie's works are much sought after by knowledgeable collectors because of his careful
attention to detail and authenticity.
Mr. Benally's works have been shown in such prestigious galleries as The Crimsom Cliff Fine
Art Gallery and Son Silver West Fine Art Gallery, both located in Sedona, Arizona. Haskie
Benally is one of the foremost American Indian Artists in the field of Western Art today.
